Problems in farming, including over-production and mechanisation

Problems in farming, including over-production and mechanisation.
  1. During the war, farmers became used to growing as many crops as possible. But during the 1920s, they grew more food than was needed (over-production), leading to falling prices and falling profits - which was also worsened by rising taxes, mortgages and wages.
  2. Some other countries like the UK, Russia and Canada were able to recover from the war and become foreign competition for the US in terms of agriculture.
  3. The Republican government didn't allow the government to buy up farmers' crops as President Coolidge thought it would encourage further over-production.
  4. The US farm population began to shrink for the first time in history - not everyone was prospering in the 20s.
