The ‘Red Scare’

The ‘Red Scare’.

The Red Scare was a nation-wide panic over the worry that Communists were trying to take over the country - and the world.
  1. There was prejudice towards newer immigrant groups, including worries of communist agitators entering the country.
  2. In 1919, the authorities used a series of bombings across the country to whip up a "Red Scare". They deported over 4000 people, mainly Russians.
  3. During the Red Scare, two Italian anarchists called Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were convicted of murder and robbery. There were protests by people claiming that it was a miscarriage of justice, arguing that the judge was prejudiced. But they were still executed in 1927.
