The Red Scare was a nation-wide panic over the worry that Communists were trying to take over the country - and the world.
- There was prejudice towards newer immigrant groups, including worries of communist agitators entering the country.
- In 1919, the authorities used a series of bombings across the country to whip up a "Red Scare". They deported over 4000 people, mainly Russians.
- During the Red Scare, two Italian anarchists called Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were convicted of murder and robbery. There were protests by people claiming that it was a miscarriage of justice, arguing that the judge was prejudiced. But they were still executed in 1927.
