Reactions to the Treaty of Versailles
Reactions to the Treaty of Versailles.
- Germans hated the treaty.
- They were angry because they: couldn't afford reparations; lost industrial areas and could not rebuild; lost pride without armed forces; saw other countries weren't disarming; didn't accept guilt for starting the war; suffered an economic crisis; lost colonies; often now lived under foreign rule in new countries; didn't accept defeat; had not been allowed to negotiate.
- "Deutsche Zeitung", a German newspaper, vowed: "We will never stop until we win back what we deserve."
- There was a revolution (the Kapp Putsch) against the treaty in Berlin in 1920.
- Germany hated reparations. They were made to pay them in 1921, defaulted in 1923, and eventually, Hitler refused to pay them altogether.
