The German Revolution of 1918

The German Revolution of 1918.
  1. At the end of WW1, there was a period of violent unrest in Germany.
  2. Kaiser Wilhelm II had ruled the German Empire as a monarch, but due to the huge discontent within the public, Kaiser was forced to abdicate in November 1918.
  3. And so, the Weimar Republic was born.
  4. A new government took power in early 1919 led by Friedrich Ebert, changing Germany into a republic. It was set up in Weimar, as Berlin was too violent and unstable. Ebert became the first President, with Scheidemann as Chancellor.
  5. Ebert led the Social Democratic Party, a moderate party of socialists. The new government was democratic, believing the people should have a say in how the country is run.
