The work of Stresemann
The work of Stresemann.
- Stresemann became Chancellor in August 1923 - he gradually led Germany back to recovery.
- In September 1923, Stresemann told Ruhr workers to return to work and stop their general strike. And two months later, in November 1923, he introduced a new German Mark called the "Rentenmark" to make the currency more stable.
- In 1924, he accepted the Dawes Plan from the US, which reorganised reparation payments.
- French and Belgian troops left the Ruhr in 1925.
- In October 1925 he agreed to the Locarno Treaty where the western borders of Germany were agreed, but not the eastern. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in this field.
- Germany joined the League of Nations in 1926 and became one of the permanent members of the Council.
- In 1928, Germany was one of the 65 countries to sign the Kellogg-Briand Act -- promising not to use violence to settle disputes.
- In 1929, the US agreed to replace the Dawes Plan with the Young Plan. Reparations would be reduced by three-quarters of the amount, and Germany was given 59 years to pay them off.
